THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Beginning March 21, the public will be invited to see the creation of one of the largest art murals in Texas: the 35,000-square-foot work is the largest outdoor public in the country Art from The Woodlands®, one of the newest pieces in the collection. Commissioned by The Howard Hughes Company (NYSE: HHC), this mural will anchor a new 2.3-acre outdoor community gathering space at Waterway Square® and transform the underutilized south wall of the Waterway Square garage into a an important piece of art. The names and work details of internationally renowned artists will be shared as the painting progresses and the final image is revealed.
A crew of 14 will work on the suspended swing stage for two weeks to create a mural that is 105 feet tall and 358 feet wide. A celebration of the new mural will take place at 1 Waterway Square on the weekend of April 9th and 10th from 12pm to 4pm as part of a free event, with live music, food carts and family-friendly events welcoming the public to enjoy the new community The space, in conjunction with the Woodlands Waterway Festival, rated as one of the top arts festivals in the country, will take place on April 9-10 from 10am-6pm.
“This new large-scale mural will add to the vast amount of outdoor public art we have in The Woodlands and be a catalyst for community engagement,” said Jim Carman, president of the Houston area of Howard Hughes Company. “This mural will add visual interest and A creative wayfinding element that draws visitors to the northeast corner of the Waterway Plaza – completes the planning of the area’s public spaces and provides a prominent backdrop for social gatherings and community events.”
The Howard Hughes Company continues to support the public art project originally initiated by The Woodlands founder George Mitchell. The program provides millions of dollars for public art in the community and has curated a collection in partnership with the Woodland Arts Council, which supports and promotes the arts, and currently houses more than 80 works, including 56 outdoor sculptures and 24 art benches . in the community.
