As the father of a toddler, finding sleep is a never-ending quest. If you are the parent of a young child, you can connect. You do your best not to wake your children when they are sleeping. And, that includes not flushing the toilet.
We’ve found that something as basic as flushing the toilet can wake our little girl from her sleep and deprive us of precious sleep time. Well, it turns out we stumbled upon a happy accident by not flushing the toilet in the middle of the night. Greatly reduce water bills!
The idea of not flushing the toilet every time you pee may sound gross to some, but there are many benefits to following the old adage, “If it’s yellow, mellow it”
Let’s take a closer look.
1. You save a ton of water – This is the most obvious benefit. Federal regulations now limit toilet flushing to 1.5 gallons. However, we live in New York State and there are a lot of old houses with old toilets. If you don’t have a fancy new federally regulated toilet, you could be flushing as much as 5 gallons per pee. The average person urinates 7 times a day. To mellow it out, just rinse twice and save up to 25 gallons of water a day!
2. It spreads less bacteria – Have you heard of “Toilet Feather”? This is one thing that happens when you flush, the toilet releases a lot of bacteria into the air around the toilet. Nasty? By flushing as little as possible, you can reduce the amount of bacteria in the air in your bathroom.
3. You will save a lot of money – Look again at number one on the list (pun intended). You can save 25 gallons per day. That means you save 750 gallons per month. In the bigger picture, you can save 9,000 gallons per year. These savings in gallons will translate into dollar savings that leave your wallet.
4. It’s good for the planet – Remember how we told you you could save 9,000 gallons of water a year by just mellowing it out a bit? Well, it turns out that not only your wallet will benefit from this, but so will Mother Earth. The world is slowly running out of clean drinking water. So by reducing flushing, we all contribute to the greater good and contribute to conservation efforts worldwide.
5. You don’t scare people in the shower— If you live in one of the older Western New York houses mentioned above, you’ll no doubt be shocked by a shower of lava hot water when someone flushes the house while you’re in the shower. Be polite to others and soften the yellow while they shower. This is the right thing to do.
