Architectural interventions and exhibitions at Salone del Mobile 2022
Only a few days remain until the annual opening of Milan Design Week 2022, one of the largest international design events, featuring Fuorisalone and Salone del Mobile. From 7 to 12 June 2022, the streets of Milan will host a series of architectural interventions and exhibitions curated by local and international designers as part of the Fuorisalone. At Fiera Milano | Rho, Salone del Mobile 2022, the highly anticipated annual furniture and interior design event, will celebrate its 60th anniversary with themes and projects reflecting “inclusive” design, promoting “autonomy, comfort, movement” Security, usability, interactivity and security “all”.

This year’s Salon theme shows that it is possible and crucial to start integrating sustainability and environmental awareness into furniture production. More than 2,000 exhibitors, including more than 600 young designers under the age of 35, will express their identity and creative freedom, using the exhibition space as an architectural and communication element, with sustainability and ecology as the main criteria.

Themes and projects discussed at Salone del Mobile 2022
At Fiera Milano Rho, visitors will simultaneously explore several recurring and new events.International Furniture Fair, International Furniture Fittings Fair, Workplace 3.0, EuroCucina centered on the kitchen and side event FTK: Technology for kitchen, the International Bathroom Show will showcase innovative design solutions like every salon show. SaloneSatellite will bring together 600 talented designers under the age of 35, while S.Project, a cross-disciplinary space focusing on different design fields, will return after a successful debut in 2019. Held by Salone del Mobile.Milano and SaloneSatellite at their respective venues. A range of architects, including Liam Young and Mario Cucinella, art directors, academics, furniture designers and illustrators, among others, will be interviewed by the all-female trio: Chiara Alessi, Maria Cristina Didero and Beatrice Leanza to discuss the design of all things, Innovation, the environment, and the trends and challenges facing today.

Salone will move faster towards being ethical and as sustainable as possible in designing, producing and distributing solutions, and it will present a large-scale project curated by architect Mario Cucinella. The 1,400-square-meter installation is titled Design and Nature It will be located in Hall 15 of S.Project, showing a benign ecosystem that represents the future of home life. It will highlight themes such as circular economy and reuse, exploring the potential of cities as “reserves” of future construction raw materials.

Beyond Milan Exhibition | Rho, designers, companies and universities will present architectural interventions, installations and innovative solutions on the streets of Milan as part of fuorisalone. This year’s edition, titled “between time and spacewill reflect the changes that are taking place in the world today, necessary to achieve future sustainability goals. The Fuorisalone 2022 programme includes Brera Design Week with more than 160 events including exhibitions, installations, group exhibitions and product novelties , and the return of Duolini Design Milano, 5VIE Design Week and Isola Design District.

UNStudio, in collaboration with the Italian Fashion Research Foundation, will present the concept of the Future Perfect project, an ongoing investigation to create a collection of “(non-)ordinary objects” designs at the Salone del Mobile. The concept is not to recycle leftover products, but to repurpose them by combining, covering and altering them to respect their original properties. CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati, in collaboration with Rhea and Italo Rota, will present a prototype of Coffee Landscape, a reconfigurable installation designed to rethink the experience of preparing and consuming coffee in the office. The design allows people to socialize on an expansive platform with reconfigurable seating of different heights.

Los Angeles-based design group RIOS will present Superbloom, a multi-sensory installation that uses color, smell and sound as a tribute to the natural and rare phenomenon of superbloom. Natuzzi Italia through Giampaolo Sgura’s photo exhibition TRE(E)PIDATION and a Germoly Marcantonio in the courtyard of Palazzo Durini Caproni di Taliedo, next to the flagship store. Nature Squared and ANOTHERVIEW are presenting VIEW 20, a limited edition bespoke architectural installation that recreates views of concept art, material design, nature and travel. The canopy is handcrafted from hand-woven abaca, rattan and gold yarn, paying homage to Rajasthan’s elegant traditional tent structures.

In addition to installations and interventions, visitors will have the opportunity to see how the architects have diversified and immersed themselves in the world of interior, furniture and lighting design, creating unique pieces in collaboration with international design brands. These collaborations include work by UNStudio, the late Spanish architect Enric Miralles and OMA, to name a few.

Designboom, Architonic and ArchDaily, which make up the DAAily platform, offer Milan Design Week 2022 visitors a unique, storytelling space designed by architects and designers for architects and designers. DAAily Bar, hosted by Swiss Corner, will be the city’s new meeting point during Milan Design Week, inviting design lovers, creatives and pioneers of the design industry to meet people from all over the world. In addition to hourly live lectures with architects, artists, product designers, floral designers and fragrance designers alike, visitors will experience a unique and immersive space featuring several art installations by renowned artists . The list of architects in charge includes Stefano Boeri, Jakob Lange of BIG, Alper Derinboğaz, Mario Cucinella, Carlo Ratti and Benjamin Gallegos Gabilondo of Supervoid.
