BIG’s multi-storey film studio for Robert De Niro set to be built in New York

Architectural Studio BIG has won approval for a 44-meter-high movie studio in Queens, New York City. This studio will be “the world’s first vertical movie studio”.

The 760,000-square-foot film and television studio, licensed last year, will be built for the New York-based developer Wildflower Development Group.

The Wildflower Development Group is collaborating with American actor Robert De Niro, his son and real estate broker Rafael De Niro, and American film producer Jane Rosenthal on this project.

According to the developers, BIG’s multi-layer movie studio will be the “first dedicated production sound stage” and “the world’s first vertical movie studio” in the city when completed in 2023.

“The village of vertical media production will be home to storytellers working in all media, a three-dimensional hub of collaboration, creativity and innovation,” said BIG founder Bjarke Ingels. I am.

“New York City is the star of many visual stories, and it’s no wonder that the city itself is a de facto character, but this complex of vertical production stages from scratch creates our future story. Shows a new chapter in the city’s ability to do.

The structure contains 11 studio modules, each module including a large stage, vertical transport, and production support including a prop store, dressing room, and technical area.

The straight building is covered with precast concrete panels, each angled to create a geometric appearance throughout the façade.

Two entrances, one for pedestrians and one for delivery and logistics, are surrounded by curved walls that guide the flow inside.

Fiber cement panels line the interior of the studio that connects it to pleated cement panels throughout the façade.

A pair of terraces accentuate the façade, providing natural light to the studio, access to the nearby waterfront and views of the Manhattan skyline.

The building will be built on a flood plain with parking and loading spaces underneath the movie studio, and the roof will include a 150,000-square-foot solar panel system.

“We are determined to create a world-class content creation campus in Queens,” said Adam Gordon, Managing Partner of Wildflower Studios.

“We tell the story in every way, including streaming, AR, VR, and games, and adopt a future-oriented building design.”

Wildflower Studios will be completed in late 2023. BIG was founded by Ingels in 2005 and has offices in London, New York and Barcelona.
