First street mural painted in Salem Grant neighborhood

On the weekend of July 4th, residents of the Grant community in North Salem took to the streets—literally.

Volunteers and neighbors met at the intersection of Belmont and Cottage Streets NE to paint the city’s first official graffiti.

Designed by local muralist Erika Baker, this mural features vibrant pink cherry blossoms against a blue and gold background.

Grant Neighborhood Association board member and artist Susan Napac said the piece was inspired by Salem’s history as a cherry city and the beautiful spring cherry blossom display at the Capitol Mall.

The painting over the holiday weekend is scheduled to conclude Monday with a block party to celebrate the community’s collective efforts to beautify and enhance the neighborhood, Napack said.

What is street painting?

Street art is a large decorative painting approved by the City of Salem and installed directly on the sidewalk of the street.
