For Freedom: Julian Assange Subject of NFT Drop At Venice Biennale

Julian Assange, the founder of the imprisoned WikiLeaks, is the subject of a new NFT collection featured at this year’s Venice Biennale Art Exhibition. The collection “This Cannot Be Erased” is a collaboration between the Greek artist Miltos Manetas and the acclaimed English composer Howie B.

Assange, who is currently fighting the transfer to the United States, is said to know it, but is not involved in the venture. Manetas, who has been investigating the digital situation for a long time, is a longtime friend of the activist.

The collection is released in three phases, each with 37 tokens, and each NFT represents Assange’s unique canvas oil painting created by Manetas. The work represents Assange’s face, crushing and never disappearing before returning with him.

The famous conceptual artist Myrtus communis is not a stranger at the Venice Biennale. He founded the Internet Pavilion for the exhibition in 2009, and high-tech tents are the venue for his latest work.

The Pavilion is currently in its 7th edition and is dedicated to Julian Assange this year. In May, Manetas and Lightbox Director Marasartre opened the door to “AIIA-Assange is the Internet, the Internet is Assange,” an exhibition featuring 222 hand-painted portraits of journalists produced by Manetas as part of the #AssangePower movement. Opened. The 2022 Venice Biennale is now in its 59th year and will be held from April 23rd to November 27th.

As an NFT collection, this cannot be erased, but lives inside and outside the exhibition’s internet pavilion. After all, this series is part of the AIIA event, but the token itself is in the buyer’s web3 wallet. The 111 artworks that make up the collection are created on Materia, a multi-chain NFT platform created by art and blockchain experts.

Uniquely, the holder of the limited edition Assange NFT will be a councilor of AIIA, and the money raised from the sale will go to the Internet Pavilion DAO. In essence, this model provides members with an opportunity to influence how the pavilion distributes funds to future art projects, with an emphasis on fostering jobs related to the freedom of the Internet.

According to Manetas, his ambition is to keep people in Assange’s plight, which could be clear given that many mainstream media have stopped reporting the case. NFTs are permanent on the public blockchain and are not easy to dismiss. For Manetas, Assange was a symbol of the Internet, exposing the contradictions of liberal democracy and, in doing so, silenced dissent and rebelled against power brokers trying to crush political opponents.

Manetas first began painting Assange when he was trapped in Colombia during the 2020 Covid. His intention was to create a new piece for Assange’s imprisonment every day. In the end, 222 portraits were created reflecting the 222 days of the Venice Biennale, half of which were provided in digital form through Materia.

The artist previously defended Assange’s cause at the “Assange State” show at Palazzo delle Espositioni in Rome in 2020 and the “Assange Situation” at the IKOB Museum in Belgium a year later. Manetas also contacted opponents with a pack of crypto artists whose collection censored for his statutory funding raised $ 54 million earlier this year.
