With the spread of smartphone cameras in recent years, photography technology has become a little lost. Imaging technology is much more common than it was a generation ago, giving more people more access to the tools they need to take pictures. Local artist Casey Karen uses analog media on 4×5 film to create permanent images of exquisite fragments of nature. In the process, she enhances her subject and celebrates the fine arts and crafts of photography.

Originally from Massachusetts, Karen came to Rhode Island to attend Providence College and earned a bachelor’s degree in photography. After the PC, Karen completed MFA in photography and integrated media at Lesley University in Cambridge. As a young artist living in Providence, Karen has developed a strong portfolio of works centered around travel to Thailand, Cuba, Nicaragua and more.

Karen uses 4×5 format film and a large format camera to recreate the beauty of nature in a new photography project entitled Peace of Earth. Karen’s images were taken while traveling in the western United States and near home, such as Martha’s Vineyard and New Hampshire, and are quiet, balanced, and accurate enough to produce stunning photos. ..

Karen describes how she came up with the Peace of Earth project as a follow-up to her graduate-level work: Explore and connect with the outside world around me, anyone I can, and anything I can. I wanted to create a photo that would allow me to share the experience of seeing beautiful places and meeting wonderful people with others. “

Karen’s image attractively moves the viewer to where she sees it directly. This is part of the magic of photography as an art form, a quality that is often overlooked in image-saturated cultures. Through Karen’s lens, her viewers can live at a price by experiencing her various trips and finding new gratitude for the places she loves.

Karen recognizes that, given the relationship between her past works and the peace of the planet, all the photographs she created prior to this project actually set the stage for its success. She states: “The rest of my photographic work fits perfectly into the Peace of Earth. I’ve always loved traveling and finding the beauty of every detail, so a photo that could unknowingly spawn something. I think I’ve created an archive. ”

Karen’s eyes, not only as a photographer, but also as an editor of her own photo archive, are on display throughout the work. From the numerous potential angles for capturing natural landmarks found in Utah arch-like national parks, Karen often finds perspectives that bring out the most sculptural and striking elements on display. .. Her heavy cameras are carried across dusty plateaus and canyons, allowing viewers to experience the breathtaking grandeur adventurously sought by artists.

Karen is enthusiastic when asked what’s special about her favorite media, 4×5 film. She says. “What’s special about 4×5 film !? I could continue for hours, but 4×5 has been the medium of my choice since I first learned about the process in 2010. I Finds the concept of recording light on a tangible sheet of that large (and even bigger!) Film fascinating. It was not possible to digitally capture the level of detail and the unique style elements. By promoting and focusing on the film, I use it to record and record each peace of the earth in the exact state of the moment, although this process is a loving task. , You have full control over development, scanning and printing. ”

The details of Karen’s work show the quality of analog film and harness its aesthetic power to focus on the landscape. The photographer’s main purpose is to shape the world for the audience, and through her Earth Peace Project, Karen does just that with her poetic sensibility and technical proficiency. From her Providence Studio, Karen skillfully assembles the wonders of nature.

Karen says what viewers want to get from the series: We not only share this planet with each other, but also with the constantly threatened natural world around us. Hopefully, by performing our roles individually and collectively, we can prevent the loss of peace on each of our irreplaceable planets. “
