“I have met people who were born blind. Which has never seen. I asked them what their image of beauty is.”
– Sophie Calle
In her work The Blind, artist Sophie Calle asked people born blind to describe their “image of beauty.” The work is arranged in 23 chapters. Each chapter includes a black and white portrait of the person, a short statement by them, and one or more color photos representing the people, places, or things they mentioned as beautiful. What follows are verbal descriptions of five chapters from the work. Each description begins with a reading of the subject’s description of beauty.
