Sumio Terrarium / NONE SPACE

A description of the text provided by the architect. To spread Sumsei’s strengths in the room, we focused on the brand’s special story. At Sumsei, there are products that you often encounter barefoot or barefoot, such as “Body Dryer,” which is the main product for easily drying the body after showering. We paid attention to the fact that it is a familiar brand among products that are easy to use in daily life. When you stand up to Sumsei with your body, the wind blows and slowly awakens your five senses. Awakening of the senses is the process of constantly redefining oneself by the senses, from recognizing one’s body as the subject of the senses. Sumsei awakens our senses from head to toe and constantly ventilates our existence, like the poet Kim Chun-soo’s poem “Flowers” and Little Prince’s “Rose”. This is an important element to unravel the space of Sumsei.

First, the body needs to be restored to nothing in order to evoke a boring daily life and awaken an unfamiliar sensation. And by intentionally opening your senses, you can feel the experience of building a layer of your senses yourself. We planned a space that opens up a different sensation for each floor, and the stairs were intended to propose the next space. Each floor melts in a spatial and temporal background and is intended to allow the audience to empathize as the sensation gradually opens. When the audience empathizes with the context of the space, not just the senses, we thought we could maximize the experience they felt there.

B1-When you go down to the basement, the space on the first basement floor is deep and midnight. According to the guide, all the spectators take off their shoes and enter the space of Sumsei with bare feet. They go through dark, blind, long passages, relying solely on candles and sensations from the tips of their limbs. It takes courage to take a step while leaving the vague fears that surround you. At this moment, the toes convey a total of three different sensations, and the feel of the ground touching the foot feels very new. In addition, you can experience how the fragments of sound that you hear change as your foot sensation changes. At the end of the aisle, there is a meditation space where you can put the candles you relied on as you walk through the aisle and wipe out your senses while watching the candles. Caressing the blurred flicker of the candles, the audience can feel the vague sensations gradually becoming clearer. After passing through the meditation space, an underground space appears that maximizes the spatial and temporal background. The space of the building was used to create a gap in the dark ground where the night sky was open.

1F Dawn Water-At the end of the 1st floor, you can feel the water flowing down from the 1st floor. As you follow the water-flowing stairs to the ground floor, the temporal background changes from midnight to dawn, and the spatial background changes from ground to wetlands. Dawn hides the light of the world and reveals only its black-and-white shape. It’s a bit more visually open than the empty ground, but it’s still breathtaking. The forward vision is still blurred, but the sharp touch of water gradually awakens the sensation. After stepping on the waterways and mud reminiscent of the coast, we arrived at the coast where the fog rises. In the tranquility of slow movement, I notice anew and gradually wake up at dawn.

2F Wind Heart-Climb the stairs along the lawn to reach the windy fields. The wind is not easy to catch with our eyes. Therefore, I thought it would be difficult to fully understand the wind just by looking at what was swaying in the wind. In this field, we have created a wind landscape that cannot be experienced in everyday life, reminiscent of the existence of wind and allowing the audience to feel various wind expressions throughout the body. The first room has a field of reeds swaying in the wind below and waves swaying in the wind above. You can lie down freely in the reed field and feel the traces of the wind with your whole body. The second room has water below and a field of time above. This time you can lie down on the surface of the water and see the fields swaying in the wind. At this point, the audience can feel a new sensation step by step, and through an unfamiliar experience, the whole body can be felt to be gradually filled with a clearer sensation. The clearer your body, the more your vaguely scattered thoughts and emotions will be organized.

3F Sumsei no Mori-After passing through the mysterious green passage where the buzzing leaves welcome you, you will finally reach the forest. Birds sing, water flows, and the sky sparkles. The 3rd floor is the Sumitomo Forest where the five senses are opened. You can also enjoy a drink with the scent of homemade basil. Audiences embrace this space with a unique sensation accumulated through the experience on each floor. You can spend your time with peace of mind while enjoying the nature that has passed.

ROOFTOP Refresh your senses-The rooftop is a space where you can expand the Sumsei forest and finish your trip. The sky is infinitely high overhead, and mirrors are swaying in the wind. The straight head of the lower square contains objects of the sky and wind. The mirror is the mirror of the self that finally faces again, and it is a long journey. As the mirror sways, our bodies repeat themselves in and out of nature. You can also feel the ever-changing length and color of light, the expression of water that captures the sky, and the sound of the wind flowing through bamboo and canes.

The world changes according to the range of our senses. In Sumsei’s space, you can discover your presence through sensory recovery, and the sensory experience leaves a clear mark in our memory. Now, like rain, we are ready to face a richer daily life than yesterday. Sumsei is a small gathering movement, a brand that brings out the joy that is always faced but not noticed, a brand that brings joy that is not noticed even if you have seen it, instead of creating novelty that you have never seen before. Ultimately, we will take the first step in making an emotional change in the world. In this way, we tried to break away from the one-sided charm of offline stores from the past to space. By keeping the product out of the foreground, we sought to bring out the positive curiosity of consumers, the primitive experience of nature, and the five senses, and to convey the brand’s message, “You don’t have to buy.”
