Quesnel Art Gallery: Mirror, mirror, on the wall

When you see Brenda Gardiner’s art, you inevitably see yourself.

Many of the pieces now on display at the Quesnel Art Gallery are stylized mirrors. But you might also be surprised at the reflections you can discover in the other forms of art she uses.

This exhibition also features her watercolor work.

“Brenda began painting with watercolors five years ago, inspired and mentored by her good friend Leah Seabrook,” said Marguerite Hall, a gallery spokeswoman. “She admits she gets lost in the medium and often finds that when she ‘comes back’, hours have passed and there are 30 paintings drying on the floor around her. Painting in watercolor calms and focuses her, allowing her to produce ethereal, sometimes whimsical treescapes.”

In a detailed interview filmed for the Quesnel Arts Council, Gardiner explained that in an introductory class she took with Seabrook, she found she understood the genre, and Seabrook was immediately receptive.

“As soon as I put the brush to the paper and saw what the water could do, it was ‘holy crow, this is amazing.’ I still honor her in my work,” Gardiner said. Seabrook passed away in 2020.

The focus of Gardiner’s watercolor work, for this show, is trees and specifically those left behind in the wake of wildfires.

“I’m inspired by the fires that happened, and the devastation, so I try to capture the beauty in the trees,” Gardiner said. “I very rarely paint a black or a brown tree.” One of her favorite subthemes is what she calls “spirit tree” images. “There will be things that people see that I don’t see. It’s a medium that allows that conversation,” she said.

Originally from Smithers, Gardiner traces her roots to the Small Frog tribe of the Witset First Nation. Her artistic routes are all over the creative map, and sometimes specifically indigenous art from her ancestors (drums, feathers, etc.), and sometimes European classical imagery, or abstract or found art.

It is this latter school of thought that permeates the other side of the gallery works in this show.

“In contrast to her watercolors are her mirrors,” Hall said. “These are bold, bright and vivid masterpieces. Constructed from an eclectic collection of objects found by Brenda in a variety of interesting locations across Western Canada, these works of art capture your attention and draw you in. Just when you think you’ve seen all of creation, you find another hidden treasure. “

“I’m the queen of thrift store shopping,” Gardiner said. “The dump boutique, as I call it, up by the dump, oh my, that’s the treasure. I can probably pump out five more mirrors when I leave the house. That’s how much stuff I collected.”

It’s a drastic change to have those mirrors and watercolors out of the house and out in public. Gardiner said the pandemic has effectively slammed the door on art sales and certainly on exhibitions. She can finally show the world what she has been doing with her creative time, during the lockdown period and beyond.

The exhibition opened on January 18th with a reception at the gallery, and will now be open for viewing until February 10th. Titled Another Brenda Lee Production, it can be viewed during regular gallery hours, Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day.

Jan 9 (Reuters) – Wall Street’s main indexes were set to open higher on Monday on optimism around China reopening its borders, while signs of a cooling labor market boosted bets of a slower pace of rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.

After the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX) and Nasdaq (.IXIC) were hammered by rapid rate hikes in 2022, Friday broke a four-week slide after a moderation in wage increases and a decline in U.S. services activity in December pinned hopes on a less hawkish stance from the Fed.

“Job creation is slowing down and wages are starting to moderate. Both are important for inflation to come under control without necessarily leading the U.S. economy into recession,” said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Financial. .

The long-awaited US Labor Department inflation report on Thursday is expected to show some moderation in year-over-year consumer prices in December.

Money market bets show a 75% chance of a 25 basis point hike in the Fed’s February policy meeting, with the terminal rate expected to be just under 5% by June.

Other economic data such as weekly jobless claims and the University of Michigan’s report on consumer sentiment will also be in focus this week as major US banks kick off quarterly earnings season on Friday.

By 8 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were up 103 points or 0.30%, S&P 500 e-minis were up 16 points or 0.41%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 56.75 points or 0.51%.

Tesla Inc ( TSLA.O ) climbed 3.3% as the electric vehicle maker signaled longer wait times for potential buyers of some versions of the Model Y in China, indicating that recently announced price cuts are dampening demand in the company’s second-largest market can stimulate .

Macy’s Inc ( MN ) and Lululemon Athletica Inc ( LULU.O ) fell 4.7% and 10%, respectively, following tough holiday quarter forecasts from both retailers.

Police foiled an attempt to steal a mural painted by enigmatic British street artist Banksy from a wall on the outskirts of Kiev, officials said.

The painting, an image of a person in a gas mask and nightgown holding a fire extinguisher, went missing on Friday after thieves removed it from the wall of a war-torn house, Kyiv Governor Oleksiy Kuleba said in a a Telegram post said.

“A group of people tried to steal a Banksy mural. They cut out the work of the wall of a house destroyed by the Russians,” said Kuleba.

The artwork was recovered by Kyiv police, who arrested eight people in connection with the theft.

“All were between 27 and 60 years old,” Kyiv police chief Andrey Nebytov said, the Guardian reported. “They are residents of Kiev and Cherkasy.”

The painting, an image of a person in a gas mask and nightgown holding a fire extinguisher, went missing after thieves removed it from the wall.

The painting was one of seven created by the mysterious street artist across Ukraine last month, including a mural of a female gymnast balancing on a pile of rubble and a young child in a karate outfit beating an adult hit opponent, both in Borodianka.

Another shown showed a young boy flipping Russian President Vladimir Putin on his back in a judo match.

The elusive artist shared the paintings on his Instagram feed. The one targeted in the theft was in a video he posted.

“I want to emphasize that Banksy’s works in the Kyiv region are under the protection of the police,” Kuleba said on his Telegram channel. “After all, these images are a symbol of our fight against the enemy. These are the stories about the support and solidarity of the whole civilized world with Ukraine. Let’s do everything to preserve the works of street art as a symbol of our future victory.”

Kuleba added that “consultations on the storage and future fate of the mural” are being conducted by authorities, the community and representatives of Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture and Information Policy.

“We asked our development industry to raise the bar,” he continued. “We’re actually going to make it harder and more expensive to buy into our community because we want them to reach that bar.”

Councilwoman Tara McFadden liked the project, but sought a friendly amendment to Councilwoman Alex Reed’s motion to include public involvement. While giving consideration and weighing the value of public involvement, he ultimately rejected the amendment. Instead, the amendment was voted on separately and failed by a 4-2 vote, with the majority opting instead for an information campaign telling people why it was a good idea.

McFadden suggested giving residents a chance to choose between the four designs originally presented or a fifth option to reject the idea altogether. She wanted it to be a short term engagement ending at the end of January.

Others, like Councilor Nagel, questioned the value of this form of public consultation, fearing that the response would be minimal. He believed this would require a sample of at least 1,000 residents. He questioned whether the question would receive that level of interest and feared it would become a niche special interest survey.

Mayor Genung was one of those who dismissed the need for public consultation.

“Originally when we first saw it at the committee-of-the-whole, we all loved it, not knowing the cost implications, without any unfettered feedback from the community. I think it was a good sampling of the representation elected by the community to make decisions on their behalf, so I don’t think we need to continue down that path.”

Patrick Wilson was the only council member who supported McFadden’s amendment. The two of them also opposed going ahead with the project without that consultation piece.

Wilson measured his opinion on the project as 60-40.

“I just think I could have seen value in seeing a little more public participation before we go ahead with it because it wasn’t that consequential to do, so I would vote against it, but I wouldn’t be as upset if I don’t lose. tonight.”

Councilor Marni Fedeyko was not present.

The additional $250,000 is on top of the previously approved $1.5 million budget for the retaining wall offsetting the realignment and upgrades to the Hwy. 1A corridor.

Contributions are no longer made to the community improvement fund due to the establishment of the town’s more robust off-site levy, but the funds left over are available for other projects in the community.

This has already attracted the attention of councilor Blomme.

The future is here, and so far it hasn’t taken the form of flying cars, robot servants, convenient interplanetary travel, or most of the other technological promises offered by 20th-twentieth-century creative media.

Rather, it is the ubiquity of screens in our daily lives that stands in as a demarcation between the quaint analog past and modernity. And so it’s fitting that Barry Anderson’s installation, “Fragments of Space: Multiplex,” reaches out to the world from four flat monitors located in the Commerce Bank Building’s fitting Digital Art Wall.

Part of a broader series of work begun in 2015 titled “Fragments of Space,” the “Multiplex” exhibition takes viewers on an imaginary tour of both physical and psychological spaces. By playing a continuous cycle, the video flows from each screen to the next, leaving all four panels slightly ahead or behind their neighbors. This perpetual motion, coupled with the deliberately skewed positioning of each screen, may be jarring at first, but the ability of an intangible artistic experience to conjure an almost physical response in its audience represents a triumph, not a flaw. not. Once viewers have taken a moment to adjust to the rhythm of the piece, they are likely to settle on a single screen to watch, perhaps pausing to focus their attention on the gestalt of the four screens interacting .

Created using Cinema 4D and After Effects software, the actual content on the screens works in tandem with the infinite loops in which they play. Passers-by who linger to view an entire cycle of the installation will be rewarded with multiple visits to two distinct realms. The more easily recognizable landscape, a sleek maze, places viewers in a first-person perspective moving through a post-industrial labyrinth, complete with quick turns and dead ends.

The purpose of the maze remains a mystery; Anderson’s work embraces the premise that the journey matters more than the destination. Traversing the digital warren happens quickly, almost to the point of feeling frantic and claustrophobic. Viewers can notice their lack of agency quite sharply, as all decisions about which way to go take place on the other side of the monitors. Someone who might have chosen to go right will find themselves going left.

To further excite the audience, Anderson’s maze is populated with terrain and artifacts that practically beg for a closer look. But alas, the movement of the video takes us past flooded rooms, a doll and even a partially submerged cow at a speed that defies any close scrutiny. Those with the courage for multiple viewings, of course, can have an opportunity to enjoy the details that a more cursory observation would miss.

Between journeys through the maze, Anderson takes his viewers into an even more surreal environment that manifests as iridescent, geometric shapes that expand and fold back in on themselves. And while these series are more abstract, there is something about the undulation of light and color that evokes calm. One interpretation could be that these segments represent the inner psychological workings of humanity. Another could see the artist gracious to his audience, giving them a meditative reprieve between forays through the more cognitively and emotionally taxing labyrinthine components of the work.

In the end, the reason for the animations, which represent great technical skill, is less important than the fact that they exist. Anderson’s art is deliberately minimalist, both aesthetically and in terms of the context it provides.

People spend a tremendous amount of their waking hours staring at screens. To do so in a way that promotes reflection and elicits an emotional catharsis is a unique and rare experience. To that end, Anderson is very successful in creating digital art for a digital age.
